West Highland Museum

The West Highland Museum is a neat, little, Scottish museum that I stumbled on with my tour group when we were visiting Fort William. I went inside to use the bathroom and was surprised at all of the amazing artifacts that were inside. There were Lochaber hooked axes and long, wicked pole arms, swords and pistols all nearly displayed with information and handwritten signs. It’s in a converted bank and filled with Jacobite and archaeology treasures. It was founded in 1922 by Victor Hodgson. Funds were raised over time to have the collection moved here and it is now free to enter. There are three floors and eight rooms and is run mostly by volunteers. Unfortunately our tour was moving on, but I would have loved to have more time to explore this interesting and quaint museum more, as I love Scottish and Highland history.

I absolutely loved the museum. There were so many things to see and read. I learned quite a lot. I also enjoyed the use of video/film. I believe there were two sections where you could sit and watch to learn. Adding various modes of learning was wonderful. The volunteers were friendly and the gift shop had a lot of cool things! My partner got themself a small claymore. Please consider donating to this museum to support them!

A fascinating museum of local history, run by volunteers, right in the centre of Fort William. Came here while on holiday, and was welcomed by a really nice lady who told me everything I needed to know about what there was to see and where to find it. Admission is free, but it's well worth making a donation. You're allowed to take photos, and dogs are allowed in on a lead. The three floors (there are stairlifts to the upper ones) are crammed with artefacts and information covering a wide range of subjects, including archaeology, the region's wildlife and geology, mountain rescue, costumes and tartans, musical instruments, WW2 and much more. Especially interesting to me was the gallery devoted to the Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Some of his clothing and personal belongings were on display, and I could climb a couple of steps to peer at his secret portrait. The artefacts from the sunken Spanish galleon are also not to be missed! There are toilets at the back of the museum, next to the natural history gallery, and a nice little shop where you can buy souvenirs and books about Scottish history. You can go around the museum in an hour, but I found it so absorbing I spent three hours here. A great introduction to my tour of the Scottish Highlands and islands!

Nice volunteers. It is worth stopping in just to see the Bonnie Prince Charlie secret portrait! They have a good-sized gift shop, so it is a great place to shop for souvenirs since your spending (and donations) can help support the museum which kindly does not charge an entry fee.

What a wonderful museum! The amount of items in their collections are vast and well displayed, even though is a free and small museum. So much history for us nerds that want to learn about the Fort William area and its role in the Jacobite uprising. The volunteer and staff are also lovely and wonderful. A must visit for everyone in the area!

I never expected to come across this plaque presented by Hiroshima in this museum I visited during my Wizard's Tale trip on a day close to Japan's War Memorial Day(V-J Day). I thought it was important to remember that my unrestrained journey was based on the long-standing friendship that the people of this region have had with the people of Hiroshima.

Lovely little museum, from the beginning where we were met by a lovely lady who explained everything about the museum to the little shop at the end. Lots of history including lots of Scottish heritage. It's well worth a visit and a complete bargain as it's free.

Several rooms, on three levels, describing the area’s history, as well as the economy, geology and wildlife. I spent about an hour, but you could easily spend more time to read all the panels. Central location. Free, but donations are welcome.

You gonna love this place! In the middle of the city at the tourists street. Major part of exposition dedicated to the military history. Other parts cover daily life of Highlands, geography, wild life and so on. At entrance, you will be welcomed by two senior local gentleman (Allan, thanks for guidance!) who will answer your questions. Good for whole family. Ps: entrance is free of charge.

I would feel guilty if I didn't leave a review of the place that I intended to, and did, see first during the time I stayed at a Fort William hotel. Because I had planned to see a few other places before catching a train shortly after midday I set an alarm on my phone, allowing me 45 minutes at the museum. I got round in only 10 minutes using a walking stick but was well pleased with what I had seen. I particularly liked seeing the tree rings (see photo). Shortly before leaving I noticed a plaque commemorating when the museum had first been opened. I went out then had to go back in to take a photo of it. The museum had become a part of what turned out to be a very memorable 5 days. I bought a very memorable memento to take back home with me. I had imagined telling our driver that I had bought a miniature whilst in town, expecting him to say that it was probably a miniature whisky. IT WAS A MINIATURE CLAYMORE.
